Members, spouses and friends of VFW Post Paul P. Busek 11447 visited Corregidor to observe the Liberation First Flag 81st Anniversary of the 503d PIR raising the US 48Star Flag on Corregidor on the 16th Feb. 1945. This was done with the cooperation of TIEZA, the new management of Corregidor, and their on-Island Staff. All the details of providing boats, a guide, the transportation on the island, notifying the Coast Guard and topping it of with a plate lunch was provided by Villa Carmen at the bottom, SE corner of Bataan.

LAS01 to LAS03 Corregidor, VFW11447 pictures show our two boats and boat landing provided by Villa Carmen, who organized us into two boats, 10 persons each; we were a party of 20 people. But all 3 pictures show us the trash problem in Manila Bay, especially now with the prevailing NE Winds driving the trash right into this Corregidor cove.

LAS09 and LAS13 Corregidor, VFW11447 pictures show the Middleside Barracks, that was our first stop and we debarked and had a closer look. The pictures show that unfortunately wild vegetation is occupying Middleside Barracks ruins again and I’m sure, that this will cause the ruins to be damaged at a faster rate now. This same unfortunate situation is also developing at the so called “Mile Long Barracks” Topside on Corregidor. At the end of this presentation I will show four (4) historical pictures that demonstrate the wild vegetation problems in the ruins!

LAS17 Corregidor, VFW11447 picture is a 1945 view of Middleside. The two Middleside Barracks are in the foreground and the large building middle left was the Army Service Club (YMCA).

LAS18 Corregidor, VFW11447 picture is a 1962 view of Middleside Barracks.
Corregidor Island was in the hands of the Philippine Military since 1947 and open Corregidor to tourism was not their responsibility and that is why the Middleside Barracks looked this way in 1962.

LAS19 Corregidor, VFW11447 picture is a 2006 view of the Middleside Barracks, so the clean-up and reinforcement of the barracks ruins did not start until about 2007. I believe this wild vegetation must have caused faster damage to the ruins!

LAS20 Corregidor, VFW11447 picture is a 2007 aerial view of the Middleside Barracks. About this year the former Old CFI must have received a grant of money the barracks ruins were completely cleared of vegetation and a contract was initiated to reinforce the barracks ruins and they looked pleasantly great and strong to weather the history to come.

LAS39 to LAS42 Corregidor Views show a monument to the Spanish War Veterans Hall used my Filipino and I assume American Masons also, as a meeting place of at least two Mason Lodges. When Fort Mills was built on Corregidor, I assume many of the engineers and technicians were masons.
To me this monument represents a very unique Philippine-American History on Corregidor and I have followed its history in this forum webpage, click here:
These pastures are about this monument, which is now located at Middleside on Corregidor, picture LAS42 is from my collection when the plaque was initially placed next to the former Fort Mills YMCA.
Another reason I like to stop at that location is, because that is the direction to the Government Ravine with the Government Vault in Fort Mills on Corregidor where the gold , silver and financial document were moved to when Gen. MacArthur and the Philippine Government moved here when they declared Manila an open city. How all that gold, silver and documents were disposed of is another most interesting Corregidor and Philippine story!

LAS42 picture is a view back to the North Shore, Bottomside on Corregidor. LAS43 picture is a view across the Enlisted Men Beach Cove towards Engineer Pt. on the other side. On the other side we see a tunnel which was used by the Japanese Navy suicide units for cover for their boats, these tunnels are all around Corregidor Island. This swimming cove was enclosed by a chicken wire boundary, sharks were an issue.

LAS43 Corregidor view image
——————————————–

LAS44 Corregidor view picture is a view down to the 92nd Garage area on the south Shore, Tailend of the former Fort Mills on Corregidor Island. We stopped here and I told my comrades all the many histories of this area. 92nd Garage area was first used by Army air spotting units, which included balloons at one time and there were hangars here and the other side of the island. Before the war it was assigned to the Philippine Scout Unit 92nd Coastal Artillery which manned and operated all the WWI left-over 155mm Artillery pieces and the towing tractors were parked here, hence the name. During the WWII Siege, President Quezon, the High Commissioner and Gen. MacArthur were quartered here in three large quarters that had existed here. When Corregidor fell and all the Filipino and American war prisoners were kept here for a number of days in a bad condition, not enough water and food. And there is more history in this area!
———————————————–
LAS45 & LAS 46 Corregidor view images show the Filipino Heroes Memorial which is located on the Tailend of Corregidor. We were able to get these fine shots from our trolley as we were he were heading to Kindley Field and the Navy Intercept Tunnel. This area is also called the Water Tank Hill and heavy fighting occurred here during the siege in 1942 and in the battle of liberation in 1945.

LAS45 Corregidor view image

LAS46 Corregidor view image
—————————————————-

LAS47 Corregidor view shows the post WWII Kindley Field control and terminal structure. A few years ago the runway was concreted BUT ONLY HALF WAY. Normally the present Corregidor tours don’t come back this far but I requested it for all the history here, the airfield during the siege, the Japanese landed here, the Navy had their famous Intercept Tunnel here and the President Aquino established a Mindanao Garden of Peace here at the entrance of Kindley Field. It seemed that the Mindanao Garden is not receiving proper care right now! The most important history to me is the Navy Intercept Tunnel; it contributed to the success of the Battle of Midway and so turned the tide in the Pacific War in the Allied favor. During the liberation of Corregidor the tunnel blue up and caused over 50 fatal casualties. In the Corregidor Forum we have a great page about the Navy Intercept Tunnel, marred though thru Photobucket imprints on the photos: https://corregidor.proboards.com/thread/953/navy-radio-intercept-tunnel

LAS48 to LAS50 Corregidor view images are from the Japanese Garden of Peace. The internet AI gives this short description:
The Japanese Garden of Peace on Corregidor Island is a memorial park on the island’s tail-side dedicated to soldiers who died during WWII, serving as a site for reflection, prayer, and reconciliation. Funded by the Japanese government, it features a 2-meter tall stone Buddha, a Shinto shrine, and wartime relics like anti-aircraft guns.
These 3 pictures give a great view of the Caballo neighbor island and show two of the 4 anti aircraft guns placed here.

LAS51 to LAS54 Corregidor view images are from the Japanese Garden of Peace. This memorial has a small pavilion which displays WWII memorabilia, photographs, and historical items. The photographs are getting old and are almost unsightly. LAS54 is an example and for this presentation I added my best copy, LAS53. To me, this picture tells an extra ordinary story of how this memorial was established. LAS52 picture is also from my collection so rhat we can read it. This picture to me again tells an extra ordinary story of Corregidor and Japanese history to me.

Google AI says further Purpose: Created by the Hohtoh Kai Society of Yokohama to commemorate the Japanese, American, and Filipino soldiers killed on Corregidor, it signifies peace and friendship rather than just honoring the occupiers.

LAS61 Corregidor view picture shows the former Fort Mills North Mine Dock, located on the North Shore, Bottomside of Corregidor. It seems a construction project has been started, I speckulate , perhaps a visitor center?

LAS62 Corregidor view picture shows that our group arrived at Battery Way. The person at left with the yellow shirt is the TIEZA on-island supervisor; I give you his first name. He was our graces host today, accompanied us all the way, making sure everything went smooth, thank you Fidel!

LAS63 Corregidor view picture is at the East end of the former Fort Mills Parade Ground. It shows our group is returning from the West end of the Parade Ground were we celebrated the 81st Anniversary of hoisting the First Flag of Corregidor’s Liberation. We are looking at two Memorial Monuments at this location; the closest on is the “Rock Forces” monument. One important change has occurred the two flag poles at this monument are removed.
———————————————————-

LAS64 Corregidor view picture is at Battery Way, yours truly is at right. The other person is a very interesting friend, he speaks Tagalog. He grew up in the Philippines as a child being a child of missionaries. He has visited Corregidor many times, like me but he much earlier and than even as a child and then as a young boy.
———————————————–

LAS65 Corregidor view picture is a zoomed in image from some distance that is why it looks a little odd. It shows the ancient Spanish cannons posted in front of the former Fort Mills and the Manila Harbor Defense Command Head Quarters Topside on Corregidor.
—————————————————-

LAS66 Corregidor view picture shows the nice clean area, the west side of it, of the so-called “Mile Long Barracks”. The problem is on the other side of the barracks trees and brushes are invading the barracks. In this picture, at the far end, the east end trees and brush have invaded and are engulfing the east end of this famous barracks.
————————————————————-

LAS67 Corregidor view picture shows the so-called “Mile Long Barracks” again but from further away. The trees blocking the view are not a threat to the barracks; they are just blocking the view.
—————————————————————————

LAS68 Corregidor view picture shows the North entrance to the Malinta Hill Tunnel. This entrance leads directly into the 1000 men hospital in the tunnel. One picture I always will remember, that during the Corregidor Siege, walking or mobile patients gathered sometime outside this entrance when it was save.
——————————————————-

LAS69 Corregidor view picture shows the ordinance repair shop, it is located about half way between Batteries Way and Hearn. I always will remember a story in 1945 experience by the 503d PIR paratroopers. An officer walked the structure and was point blank killed, and the paratroopers brought hell down to the Japanese inside.
————————————————————–

LAS70 Corregidor view picture is a view into the main entrance of the former Fort Mills hospital on Corregidor Island and we see the stairway going up to the operating rooms on the 2nd floor.
—————————————————–

LAS71 Corregidor view picture is a nice view of the Malinta Hill and we see the West Entrance of the Malinta Hill Tunnel.

LAS72 & LAS73 Corregidor view images show us approaching the hospital. LAS72 picture shows us passing the dirt road going past the former Fort Mills Commissary on Corregidor. LAS73 picture present us the hospital in view.

LAS73 Corregidor view image
———————————————————

LAS74 Corregidor view image is a mystery to me. It is a large area with almost no large trees, it seems only under brushes are growing here. How come, what happened here? I don’t know, perhaps some reader knows. It is an area east of the Commissary and the Mile Long Barracks. One sees this area when one drives to the hospital and just passed the commissary when one makes a left turn to the hospital, then this area is to your right.

LAS75 Corregidor view image is a map with many of the former Fort Mills structures on Corregidor to help you with your orientation!
