Col. W. Massello, Battery Way, Corregidor Siege

Zo703. Lt. Col. William Massello is honored by Mayor G. Edward Bradley in Sommerville, Mass., as a survivor of the Corregidor Siege in 1942 and being on a Hell Ship, and POW in Japan. The Boston Sunday Globe got it completely wrong! The Allied personnel on Corregidor, ordered to surrender, DID NOT PARTICIPATE in the Death March on Bataan, they were marched thru Manila by the Imperial Japanese Military who wanted to demonstrate their believe that they were superior to the white race. I have met actual Death March Survivors from the association of the Battling Bastards of Bataan who felt bitter about that mistaken believe that the Corregidor defenders participated in the Death March or were kept in the POW Hell Hole of Camp O’Donnell. This album is about new pictures about Col. Wild Bill Massello (Hero of Battery Way during the Corregidor Siege) which I received from John Duresky and Lt Col David Britt, USAF (Ret), who are going to write a book about Army Lt. Chester K. Britt, Hell Ship Oryoku Maru, Ft. Wint, Olongapo. My friends, doing research for their book, found a memorial dedicated to Col. W. Massello, at Fort Bliss in El Paso. Fort Bliss is special to me, its main function is Anti Air Craft Defense (AAA), In 1972-73 I was a student there in a 35 weeks Viet Nam language course, and I met German Air Force Personnel who in 1959 wore US Uniforms for AAA training. At the end of this album are more links about Col. Massello.

Zo721.The Kwiecinski family had a good readable image of the plaque at Battery Way dedicated to Walter Kwiecinski. He and his crew served on the last gun, still able to be fired, at Battery Way, Corregidor Island, in the former Fort Mills. This plaque tells the rest of the story.

Zo722. On my visit to Corregidor, the 7th Nov. 2016 with some Marine Friends, we noticed the Kwiecinski Couple was honored by three organizations; the couple had intimate relations with. The Kwiecinski couple resided on Corregidor approximately from 2008 to 2015. The Corregidor Foundation INC. (CFI); Filipino-American Memorial Endowment (AMSHAM PHILS.); Sun Cruises INC (SCI). A plaque was placed under the plaque that honored Steve Kwiecinski’ father who manned the last firing mortar at Battery Way on the 6th of May 1942.

They retired in their mid-50’s and moved to Corregidor, a WWII Battle Site in the Philippines. Steve’s father Walter fought and was captured there by the Japanese, but survived the war. Steve wrote a book about his father, “HONOR, COURAGE, FAITH: A Corregidor Story,” which is available in paperback in the Philippines, and on Amazon Kindle worldwide. Steve and Marcia loved to entertain guests on Corregidor and take them to out-of-the-way places on the island. They also host tours for Valor Tours, LTD of San Francisco.

The story of a son tracing his father’s footsteps and discovering a true and inspirational story of courage, faith, and patriotism in the days of Bataan, Corregidor, and Japanese POW camps in WWII.
“I find Honor, Courage, Faith: A Corregidor Story very well written, flowing well. In Part 1, the author does a first-rate job of intertwining his own travel diary with his father’s personal accounts. The items in Parts 2 and 3 add a great deal to the story and it was really exciting to learn that the author actually got to meet two men from his dad’s battery. Their comments clarify some of the questions raised and unanswered in Part 1.
