Ze788. The USMC Firing Range at Maquinaya in 1908. The river in this valley still has that Maquinaya name today but the area is now Barrio Barretto. My house, today, is near were the targets were. This picture came from the Earl Hancock “Pete” Ellis Picture Collection in the U.S.M.C. Archives.

Early last century, during the Spanish-American War which extended into the Philippine-American War the U.S.M.C had 2 regiments in the Philippines. At one time it was even a Brigade Command. They were spread out to Cavite, Olongapo and fought in Samar, China etc. At that time the Philippine -American War was called The Philippine Insurrection. The area that has become Barrio (Barangay) Barretto, now a popular international vacation spot, was used as a firing range by the Marine Corps and the Navy.
At the liberation of the Philippines 1945, at Gen. MacArthur’s return, it became the Naval Supply Depot for a few years and then it was returned to the Philippine authorities.
