SBFZ Fence around the Familiar Peak on SBFZ 2022-01-21

Zf510. (007) this is one of 13 images in the above album about my track of this -along the SBFZ Fence around the Familiar Peak- walk from Google Earth and my Garmin account and they give other relevant information. In new Cabalan I forgot to safe my GPS track, so the last 2 km of my track have to be discarded.

This is an album of a walk from the Olongapo Landfill in New Cabalan, thru the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ the former Subic Bay Naval Base) fence, on and around Familiar Peak on SBFZ, along the SBFZ Fence to Barangay Bangal and continues along the fence to the bridges of the Subic Express Way over the Jadjad River and valley and then back. Along the way I followed a few trails and shot some pictures of that huge development project on the Tipo Hills, near the SBFZ Tipo Security Gate. It is called the Tipo Hightech Eco Park.

This area, these hills and ridgeline have attracted me to walk here for another reason. This was the site of a very bitter struggle of the Allied/American Forces called the Struggle of the Zig Zag Pass, part of the Battle for Bataan. The Japanese prepared these ridges for defense and died here, 2400 out 2800 per Wikipedia, click here. The battle lasted 2 weeks and the Americans suffered also many casualties.

An album was established about this walk with 102 images in my Photobucket account; this is the URL, click here:

This is a short presentation of only 15 images:

Zf511. 019) this is one of 10 pictures of the Olongapo City Landfill area. The pictures show the walk down and back to the landfill. We also see the old one, all covered up with dirt, higher up from the present landfill. A decade ago or so, a trash landslide occurred here and killed someone, maybe which helped to initiate changes to this Olongapo Landfill.

Many people live outside the perimeter fence, come thru holes and use the perimeter road for transportation. This fence was built by the Philippine authorities after the Navy left in 1992.

Zf517. This is one of 14 images of the barangay (village) Bangal. Bangal is located near the Ann Raquel Resort which many travelers probably saw driving to Olongapo. I went thru a gate and entered the Bangal village, and this is a view of the Zambales Highway. About 100 meters left is the Anne Raquel Resort.

Zf518. This lady was born 1962; her family lived here at this spot, outside the perimeter, since 1977. She confirmed to me that pipes were running here which I saw here in 1991, when I walked here but cannot be seen now. I suspect those pipes are the Clark fuel lines. (076) this is one of 19 images of continuing my walk along the SBFZ fence from Bangal to the Subic Bay Express Way bridges over the Jadjad River Bridges. Here too, people are living just outside the fence and use the perimeter road as their means of transportation. The rest of these 19 images show my walk back to the car in New Cabalan. By the way this fence was built by SBMA in the Mid 90s, I walked here in 1991, the Marines were patrolling but there was no fence.
