The Coastal Defense Study Group has visited The Manila and Subic Bay Defense Forts and Island almost on an annual basis. Because of the virus from China Sun Cruises quit their hosting and touring of Corregidor Island and it is now impossible to visit Corregidor to research, do study work on this heroic history of the Philippines and the United States. However, short tourist type visits are possible again but are unsatisfactory and awful expensive now.

The c.d.s.g. came again this year and with the most knowledgeable Filipino Historian Tony Feredo and with his help managed to visit Caballo Island, ex Fort Hughes for a short day visit. Caballo Island is now managed by the Philippine Navy.

The CDSG (click here) is a non-profit corporation formed to promote the study of coast defenses and fortifications, primarily those of the United States of America;
their history, architecture, technology, and strategic and tactical employment.

The leader of this c.d.s.g. visiting group wrote me this on Wed 4/1/2026 9:40 PM:

Hi Karl, while I have a Facebook account, I really don’t use it much. But I’m guessing you’ve seen pictures of the visit of a little group I led to Corregidor and Caballo last week. Thanks again for your earlier advice on how this had to be structured these days. We did try it out – commuting each day via banca, staying in Mariveles, begging daily for on-island transport, etc. Because it was so much more expensive than past trips and resulting in lots of lost time and awkward schedule and we didn’t intend to see or find anything “new”, I purposely didn’t want to impose on you to tag along. Moffitt came for a little of it mainly because he had never seen Caballo, and Feredo just because he’s been a friend of long standing.

I guess I’m concluding that this method of visit is unsuitable for our periodic Coast Defense Study Group visits, and am going to recommend that we do NOT come back as a group until something dramatically changes – which won’t probably happen in our life times.

Oh well, we certainly had some good trips in the past, and this time I did enjoy seeing some of the batteries again just as old friends.
