This place is full of history and that is why I like to go there. I shot these pictures in 2024.

Google AI Overview

During World War II, Guiuan in Eastern Samar served as a massive US Naval Base (Base 3149) and a critical naval supply depot, established in late 1944 following the Leyte Landing to support Allied operations in the Pacific. Built by Naval Construction Battalions (Seabees), this base, which included a major airfield on Calicoan Island, was one of the largest in the Philippines and the Far East, accommodating over 100,000 personnel.

Key Aspects of the Guiuan Naval Base & Supply Depot:

  • Strategic Role:The depot acted as a primary supply, repair, and refueling facility for the US Navy, including airfields that housed bombers and fighter planes.
  • Construction Units:The 93rd and 61st Seabees played a pivotal role in constructing the facility, beginning in December 1944.
  • Infrastructure:The site featured a 7,000-foot runway (now Guiuan Airport), a 3,000-bed naval hospital, an ammunition depot, and significant storage facilities that transformed Calicoan Island into a major logistics hub.
  • Geographic Scope:The base complex stretched across several villages in Guiuan and included surrounding islands like Manicani and Tubabao.
  • Remnants:Today, remnants of the “mega base,” such as concrete foundations and Quonset hut bases, can still be found in the area, particularly near the airport and on Calicoan Island.

The base was decommissioned after the war, but it remained a vital, albeit temporary, strategic location. Further, local heritage groups on ProBoards provide more in-depth historical research on the military and guerilla activities during that period.
