The bells as they sat on a field at former Fort D. A. Russell. Upon abandonment by the Army they sat in obscurity for half a century until placed in a brick enclosure by the USAF in 1967.

For over half a century the Bells of Balangiga sat somewhere on the plains of a Wyoming military base with no apparent interest by anyone in the United States or the Philippines, certainly not the U. S. Army which initially brought them to America and then abandoned them. They had been forgotten in the Philippines as well, even though they were not the only bells removed from Catholic churches and taken to the U.S. as souvenirs.
